Otherwise known as mini-split AC, ductless air conditioners work without, well, ducts.
Unfortunately, not every home comes with preexisting ducts. Hence, when the owner buys a new AC, they have to decide if they need to install ducts. After all, the process is not as easy as anyone might think, and that’s without mentioning the total cost hence why some prefer to buy ductless ACs.
Before you go out to buy one, you should know how a ductless AC works.
Working Of Ductless Air Conditioner:
In a standard AC, the two units, indoor and outdoor units, are connected through a series of ducts, and the indoor unit is somewhere out of your sight, like in the attic. But the indoor unit of ductless AC is in the room that is being cooled.
The room that needs cooling is connected with an outdoor compressor. The warm air that is in the air is blown over the coils containing refrigerant in the indoor unit and is absorbed. After that, the refrigerant in those coils takes all of that heat and transfers it to the outdoor unit. The ducts are not required, as the indoor units, small in size, are placed in the rooms that require cooling. In simple words, the warm air absorbed from the room is sent back out again after being cooled.
Is Getting A Ductless Air Conditioner Worth It?
Well, if your home already has ducts, buying and installing a ductless AC can be very costly on the initial purchase. But if there are no ducts, then these air conditioners are worth every penny. They are energy efficient and easy to install, as the installation process is not very complex. They do not take much space and blend in with the room.
In traditional AC’s, leaks in ducts can allow the cool air to escape, which will force the AC to run overtime to compensate for that. It is obvious that you won’t face such a problem with Ductless AC. They are much more efficient and consume less energy. But with all these advantages, there’re disadvantages too.
The biggest issue with the ductless AC is that it cools only one room in which it was installed. That problem can be rectified, but the process is a bit lengthy. Then there is the problem of the cost. Specifically, it costs 30% more expensive than the traditional ones, but installing ducts is another expense, so it depends on the situation. And finally, these units are visible to everyone and not out of sight if it does not blend in with the room décor, too bad, because it needs to be in that room to cool it.
