Getting a new HVAC system installed is a big investment, but that doesn’t always mean it will be worthwhile. Dishonest companies exist in every industry, and you may find yourself with a faulty HVAC system and no warranties to get it fixed if you aren’t careful about what company you choose. Here are 8 mistakes to avoid when hiring an HVAC contractor.
1. Not Getting A Second or Third Opinion
You can’t get a good idea of what an average price looks like without talking to three or more companies. If two of these companies suggest a fairly similar price and another is exceedingly low or high, you’ll know which one isn’t average. A good rule of thumb is to always ask a trustworthy friend or family member that has had many years of experience with HVAC companies. Getting their opinion on the prices you were offered can help weigh the pros and cons of quality of work and investment.
2. Relying on Over the Phone Estimates
It can feel like a hassle to make three separate appointments for people to come to your house for an estimate, but the truth of the matter is over the phone estimates are little more than a guess. An HVAC technician will need to assess your home, including its size and other factors, in order to give you an accurate estimate.
3. Not Checking Reviews
Even if everything else seems great with a company, you should still check reviews on Google or Yelp before making a decision on a company. These reviews may reveal important details to you, such as unprofessional conduct or problems that aren’t obvious from speaking directly with a company.
4. Not Asking for References
Ask people you know (or ask for opinions on social media) that have used them to find out how they did personally. Asking people gives you the opportunity to ask questions that may not be in a review, such as whether the company was habitually late, or whether their HVAC system is still in good working order months down the road.
5. Going with the Cheapest Price
You get what you pay for. If a company is offering an HVAC system for hundreds less than other companies, it’s likely that they are unlicensed, uninsured, or installing very cheap equipment. If one price is much lower than the average, proceed with caution. This could cause numerous and costly repairs. Always make sure to ask HVAC company’s prior to booking if they have licensed and insured technicians.
6. Choosing an Unavailable Company
Did you call the company only to be placed on hold for hours? Are your e-mails not returned? Does it seem to take forever to get an appointment, and they were late when the company finally came to assess your home? A company that is too busy to know you or your system on an individual level may not be the best fit, especially with continued maintenance.
7. Not checking up on licenses or insurance
You might assume that a company has all the licenses and insurance required by law, but that doesn’t mean they actually do. Make a point of looking up the licenses for every company you look at, and run away from any that don’t have insurance, licenses, or drive unmarked white vans. You may receive poor quality of work and may end up spending more money in the long run. It’s NO BUENO.
8. Not checking up on warranty information
Warranties can be voided by improper installation, or the system being installed by companies that aren’t licensed or trained. Check the warranty information for the system to be installed, and make sure that it won’t be voided by the actions of you or the company installing the system.
HVAC systems are a necessity in the RGV, but the wrong one can lead to you suffering in the heat while you wait for a replacement or repair. A quality HVAC system installed by knowledgeable professionals on the other hand, will last for years and keep you cool during the hottest of seasons.
